HISTORY

Kupe the famous Polynesian Navigator from Hawaii when roaming the seas looking for new lands discovered New Zealand or Aotearoa (Land of the Long White Cloud) the name he gave when he first sighted this land.

Like Captain Cook a thousand years later, Kupe circled both the North and South Island before returning to Hawaii. He told the people the good news, the beautiful and wonderful land he had discovered. He then gave directions and the course for the new land.

After careful study of the directions given by Kupe, many canoes left the islands for New Zealand. There was however, one main migration formed of a fleet of seven canoes which arrived here about the year 1350. They were the Te Arawa, Tainui, Mataatua, Kurahaupo, Tokomaru, and the Aotea.

The Aotea canoe was in command of Turi as Captain. With him was his wife Rongorongo, his son Turangaimua, his daughter Taaneroa and of course many others. During the voyage Turi wife gave birth to another son, Tutawhanau-moana (born of the sea)

They landed safely on the West Coast of the North Island at what is known today as Aotea Bay near Kawhia Harbour. After a long rest they traveled south overland and reached Patea where they settled and Turi built a home for his people. At Patea another son was born to Turi,s wife and he was named Tongapotiki

From this last son of Turi and Rongorongo of the Aotea canoe descended Pamoana the Chief of Koriniti Marae

Pamoana a seventh generation descendant of Turi and Rongorongo was born in Patea in the early 1700,s and grew to be a young man of great physique and of strength and was destined to live to a ripe old age. When he moved to the Whanganui River he took for his wife Tauira. She was the youngest Grand Daughter of Poutama the Chief of the people Ngati Poutama of Hikurangi. They moved to Operiki a short distance away. Pamoana proved to be a great warrior and took part in many battles. Many years later Pamoana was appointed leader of the people. From this appointment a new tribal name was born; Ngati Pamoana of Koriniti which is also only a short distance from Operiki.
